WHAT WILL THEY COME UP WITH NEXT?

Text and photos by: Katrina Marasigan

Allow me to take you on a short trip down memory lane. Imagine yourself, say, about 6 or 7 years ago. Can you still remember what life was like during those times? More specifically, how was the technology back then? If you were like most people, you most probably owned a small beeper or pager (remember those little gadgets?), and maybe if you were lucky, an analog mobile phone. It was considered quite easy to contact people, since everyone was just either a "beep" or a call away. Like everyone else, you were amazed at how science has developed since you were a kid, when advanced technology only meant the Family Computer, or Word Star and Lotus, or PacMan, or something of the sort.

Fast forward to the present time, year 2003. What a difference a few years make, don't you think? My, how things have changed since when you were young. Already long forgotten, the pagers and beepers are no longer in existence and are now considered "out". They have now been replaced by the more efficient, fast-changing, and ubiquitous cellular phones.

The continuing evolution of the cellular phone is truly something to be amazed at. It's enough to make the head of a not-so-tech-savvy person like myself spin. In today's modern and fast-paced world, convenience is the name of the game. Efficiency, usability, and accessibility are crucial factors to consider as well, which is what the local and international phone industries have been greatly helping their consumers with, through their consistently innovative contraptions. Through modern communications, everyone is now virtually just a touch away from everyone else in the world.

What used to be a simple device for sending and receiving local text messages and phone calls can now be used for a wide and ever - increasing variety of purposes. Now, not only could you use your compact cellular phone to get in touch with your family and other loved ones abroad, you could also use it as a radio (whether it be AM or FM, the choice is yours), camera, organizer, gaming device, and a personal computer with access to the World Wide Web as well. Aaahh... the many great wonders of technology. Let me go back to my original question--What could they possibly come up with next?

Well, a lot, apparently. Nokia, Ericsson, Siemens and all the other mobile phone companies are continuing to change the way we think of cellular phones by constantly coming up with new, exciting, and revolutionary mobile functions for their devoted and technology - hungry patrons. Truth be told, I wouldn't be surprised if one day, scientists discover a way for us to communicate with our cellular phones. Hey, with the way things are going, you can never really know for sure. In today's world, anything can (and most probably will) happen. Hmm... I wonder how Sir Alexander Graham Bell would react to all this...
