The Best Barbeque in town!

Text and photos by: Kate de la Peña

In a traditional Filipino birthday party, what are the kinds of foods usually served? If it is a kiddie party, you could bet your life that the party will serve spaghetti with hotdog, hotdogs with marshmallows on sticks, fried chicken, ice cream, birthday cake etc. For the more mature kind of party or for a fiesta, you don’t need to be a psychic to predict that there will be lechon (with matching apple in its mouth), pansit, lumpia, beer, etc. Whether it’s a children’s party, a senior citizen’s birthday party, or any gathering for that matter (even inumans and family reunions), one thing is common! Barbeque will always be there!

Barbeque has always been a staple in every Filipino handaan. From the kids to the grandmas and grandpas, from the rich to the poor, all love munching barbeque! In every corner, there is always a barbeque stand lurking around. Most of the established restaurants here in the Philippines are well known and successful because of their barbeque. Aristocrat for example has always been the Filipino Family Restaurant because every Sunday, families go there to have lunch. Most of the families order chicken or pork barbeque. Aling Nena’s is a household name all over Metro Manila because of its succulent barbeque.

Even though barbeque is not really an authentic Filipino cuisine, it has always been part of our culture. For me, one food establishment serves the best barbeque all over the metro. I was never really a big fan of barbeque but this barbeque I am about to talk about makes me drool and salivate just thinking about it. The best barbeque for me is the barbeque being served at Julia’s Carinderia!

Julia’s who? Julia’s where? This carinderia may not be famous or familiar to many, but hopefully, by word of mouth, the barbeque here will be the talk of the town. The barbeque in Julia’s Carinderia is actually a legendary among the residents in Marcelo Green Village, Bicutan, Parañaque because it is located right outside MGV’s main gate. Taxi and tricycle drivers who hang around in that area could also attest the tastiness and succulence of the barbeque in Julia’s Carinderia.

Julia’s Carinderia has been around for quite some time already. It has been there for more than five years. The family business of the owner is raising pigs. They thought, why not use some of the pigs we raise and put up a barbeque stand in our village. Hence, Julia’s Carinderia was born. Ever since then, their barbeque has been a legend among the residents of MGV.

What is their secret formula? According to their cook, they soak the meat with sprite and pineapple juice. The barbeque sauce includes catsup. Of course, the actual procedure of making the recipe is a secret. After all, why make when you could actually buy nearby?

For those who haven’t tried their barbeque, allow me to give you a sneak peek by letting me describe the taste to you. Just by looking at it, you could easily tell that it is juicy. When you start biting the meat, you could feel the juice coming out of the meat. The meat is very tender as it easily glides off the stick. The sweetness and thickness of the meat is just right. Even the fat is good! So what do you think? Did I give you enough reason to go all the way to Parañaque to have a taste of their barbeque? Well, I certainly hope so!

What’s even more fantastic is that the barbeque only costs P10 a stick! Now that’s value for your money! There are also other good things being served at Julia’s Carinderia. Their arroz caldo and goto are also a must try. Both cost less than P20!

There are plenty of good things found here in Metro Manila. A lot of them are not found in the fancy malls we usually go to. Just look around and may find a treasure, a treasure like Julia’s Carinderia!
